Data driven decision making & How to cooperate with Giants like Google

Nicholas Heller, Co-founder of Fractal Labs and previous Head of New Business Development, Google EMEA

Nicholas Heller is co-founder of Fractal Labs, a finance and analytics focused technology company, connecting investors and entrepreneurs, and helping them make better decisions using data. He is also Co-Chair of SVC2UK and Founders4Schools, UK based non-profits focused on building the entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Previously, he was Head of New Initiatives and Product Partnerships at Google, leading business development teams across a number of product areas, including Emerging Markets, the Cultural Institute, international Google [ x ] deployment, Media & Publishing, and many more. He has spent his career in tech, media (Viacom), finance (Royal Bank of Canada) and as a board director (Locationary--sold to Apple), entrepreneur (Degrees of Separation), advisor and investor, working on new product incubation, exploratory efforts in technology and telecoms, strategic partnerships, and alternative distribution models. In 2010, he was also honoured as one of the global 40-under-40 by the telecoms industry.

He is passionate about creativity, projects of positive consequence, and most importantly, people. Nicholas holds a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Western, and an MBA from the University of Cambridge.

Finding new technology to drive a global company

Ramalinga Ramamurthy, Senior Venture Principal, Shell Technology Ventures

Ramalinga is the Senior Venture Principal at Shell Technology Ventures (STV). He has worked at Shell for over 33 years in the Oil and Gas sector in different disciplines; in Downstream (research, refining/manufacturing, oil trading and oil supply chain), Upstream (Gas & Power) as well as Group Strategy. The last twelve years he has spent in commercial positions. Ramalinga is based in Rijswijk, the Netherlands

Shell Technology Ventures (STV) is focused on accelerating development and deployment of new technologies that enhance Shell’s core and emerging businesses. STV is a strategic investor. STV are stage agnostic and like to syndicate with other corporate and financial VC’s and invest globally. Apart from investing in the traditional Oil & Gas space, STV also invest in future energy technologies (e.g. power storage, hydrogen, wind etc.)

Perspective on technology developments and trends

George Coyle, Manager of Investments, ConocoPhillips

George Coyle leads ConocoPhillips Technology Ventures’ venture capital and Energy Technology Ventures investing activities. Since starting the CVC group at COP a little over 3 years ago, he has focused on finding great teams that are commercializing energy technologies that can improve the performance and sustainability of ConocoPhillips operations. George is a director or observer on the boards of Blue Spark Energy, Ciris Energy, Foro Energy, Lance Energy Services, Oxane Materials, Skyonic, Ziebel, and Zilift.  Other COP portfolio companies include drillMap, Lux Assure, Modumetal and Saltworks Technologies. He has over 25 years of experience in E&P and technology commercialization, including being President and CEO of a venture capital-backed company developing and manufacturing composite pipe for the offshore and deepwater O&G markets. George worked 19 years with Chevron, starting as a geophysicist and holding positions of increasing responsibility in business and strategic planning, information technology, asset management, new ventures and corporate venture capital. George has a BS in Earth Sciences from the University of New Orleans, an MS in Geology (Geophysics option) from the University of Kansas and an MBA from Tulane University.

Tom Arnoy CEO & Co-founder, Zedge

Tom Arnoy is the CEO and co-founder of Zedge. Under his leadership, the company's apps have surpassed 100 million downloads on Android and iOS. The Android app has been in the top 15 of all free apps on Google Play for four years running. The popularity of Zedge has made it a premier partner of some of the leading game publishers in the world, including Zynga, King, DeNA, and Gree. The company's apps have become an outstanding global, non-incentivized user acquisition platform. Zedge has offices in Trondheim and New York and its investors include IDT Corporation and Shaman II.

Being acquired – Lessons learned

Geir Førre, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Silicon Labs

Geir Førre has more than 20 years of experience from the global semiconductor industry as serial-entrepreneur, executive & CEO, with experience spanning from research, development, marketing, finance and management. After a few years doing research at SINTEF he founded Chipcon, a company that became market leader in low power RF solutions. Geir served as the President and CEO from its beginning in 1996 until January 2006 when the company was acquired by Texas Instruments Inc. for 1.3 billion NOK. Post-acquisition Geir led the global Low Power RF business unit for 18 months. Geir founded Energy Micro in 2007, a company that established itself as a market leader in low power 32-bit microcontroller solutions.  He served as the President and CEO from its beginning in 2007 until July 2013 when the company was acquired by Silicon Laboratories Inc. for 1.0 billion NOK. Post-acquisition Geir is serving as the Senior Vice President of the microcontroller and wireless business unit. Geir holds a MSEE from NTNU in Trondheim, Norway

Scaling globally - the challenges and the opportunities

Mattias Ljungman, Partner, Atomico

Mattias launched Atomico in 2006 alongside Skype founder Niklas Zennström, sourcing investments and building Atomico's team of experts who help portfolio companies to scale globally.In that time, Mattias has been involved with exits or substantial transactions in companies including Supercell (sold a majority stake to SoftBank valuing the business at $3bn in 2013), The Climate Corporation (acquired by Monsanto for $1.1B in 2013), Xobni (acquired by Yahoo! in 2013) and Power Reviews (acquired by Bazaarvoice in 2012).

Mattias works closely with a number of portfolio companies on their expansion, including Supercell, Klarna, Hailo, 6Wunderkinder and ChemistDirect. He also leads the work of Atomico's global Value Creation Team, which helps portfolio companies to scale across Europe and into large emerging markets like China, Japan, Brazil, Turkey and Korea, where Atomico has experienced people on the ground. The team also helps founders with other skills that may not be native to them but which are critical to get right in a growing business, like talent and communications.
Before launching Atomico, Mattias was the head of investments at CLS Holdings where he was responsible for the sale of Sit Up TV for $360 million in 2005, and held previous roles working in M&A consultancy at LEK and in fund management at Valu-Trac. He holds a Masters from the Stockholm School of Economics and a BA with Honors from McGill University.

Terje Svaboe is a Norwegian former journalist living in Vienna. He has previously worked at Norway’s largest newspapers Aftenposten and VG, as well as the Norwegian National Broadcasting (NRK), where he hosted several debate shows. Terje Svaboe has also worked for public relations agency Dinamo, and as general manager of the conservative Norwegian think tank Civita.

Airport shuttle

The airport shuttle departures every 10 minute in both direction, Monday - Friday, between. 04.00 from Trondheim and at. 07.20 from Vaernes. Customized service to all flights and all flight arrivals on Saturday. Airport shuttle bus serves all hotels in the city center and runs from / to St. Olav's Hospital and Marienborg station.
