A comprehensive guide to using acupuncture in pregnancy, labour and postpartum

Dr Debra Betts (PhD) has a background in nursing and graduated with a Diploma in Acupuncture from the London College of Acupuncture in 1989. Returning to New Zealand in 1991 she established a private practice specialising in pregnancy and women’s health care.

She began specifically developing and teaching acupuncture courses to midwives in 1997. This led to the publication of articles on the use of acupuncture in obstetric practice in 1999 and her book “The Essential Guide to Acupuncture in Pregnancy & Childbirth” in 2006. With the completion of her PhD on the use of acupuncture in threatened miscarriage she is currently the Director of Postgraduate Programmes for a masters blended learning course through New Zealand School Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine. She is also a supervisor at a hospital antenatal acupuncture clinic and lectures internationally on the use of acupuncture in obstetric care.

Saturday
Acupuncture in early pregnancy: treating with confidence during conception and the first trimester.

Safety first
Examining safe practice from a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and western medical perspective. This includes the relevance of points labeled as “forbidden” in some acupuncture texts. Specifically their use in research, including animal models, use in China for medical abortion and their use in clinical practice from a survey of Australian and New Zealand acupuncturists.   When to refer from a Western medical perspective for early pregnancy complications and the evidence for acupuncture as a safe therapy within the literature will also be presented.

Treatment planning for clinical practice
Examining historical TCM concepts and the latest western medical research to determine   what acupuncture treatment may be beneficial around the time of implantation and during very early pregnancy.
