In accordance with the Regulations of 5 June 2014 No. 805 on the medical examination of employees on Norwegian ships and mobile offshore units, Section 7, prior to approval by the Norwegian Maritime Authority (NMA), a seafarer’s doctor must successfully complete an approved course in maritime medicine. These courses are provided by the Norwegian Centre of Maritime and Diving Medicine on behalf of the NMA.
Following a recent review, a single course is offered to seafarer’s doctors practising outside of Norway. This course is a combination of the previous basic and refresher courses and meets the requirements of the Regulations that entered into force on 1 July 2014.
The new Regulations increase the authority and the obligations of the approved seafarer’s doctors, and the course is regarded as important for professional reasons in addition to being a requirement according to the Regulations.
The course will be held at Carlton Hotel Singapore, 76 Bras Basah Rd, Singapore 189558 on 12th – 14th February. Please see the attached programme. Attendance at all of the lectures is compulsory in order to successfully complete the course.
The registration fee of NOK 8750 includes lunch and coffee breaks all 3 days. Accommodation (nights) at the hotel is not included.
Distance learning of approximately 15 hours must be completed prior to attendance on the course. This includes the preparation of 2 clinical cases for discussion during the course. A pretest multiple choice examination must also be passed before attending the taught course. All relevant course material will be sent by email in the middle of November.
The closing date for registration is 30th September 2019. However, we are not in a position to guarantee the course will go ahead before we have a minimum number of participants. Please register as soon as possible so we can confirm the course at the earliest opportunity. Once your registration and payment is received, a full refund will be offered in the event that we are forced to cancel the course because of a lack of interest. Additional expenses incurred are done so at your own risk.
Obtaining approval as an NMA seafarer’s doctor
All doctors are welcome to attend this course whether or not they wish to seek approval as a seafarer’s doctors from the NMA.
It must be noted that attendance and successful completion of this course does not guarantee approval as an NMA seafarer’s doctor. The approval process starts with an assessment of the needs for another doctor to be approved in the country or region of concern. If this is considered necessary, a doctor will be approved, provided necessary competence is documented – including the successful completion of a mandatory course.
If the embassy does not regard an additional doctor necessary, approval cannot be guaranteed, even if the course is passed. We recommend that any doctor who seeks approval as an NMA approved seafarer’s doctor contacts the embassy to explore whether he or she can expect approval if the competence requirements are met, including the basic training course.

- Cancellation prior to 40 days in advance of the course: 100% refund of the course fee.
