Opportunities and Challenges for Oil and Gas Competence in CCS

Abstract

The energy transition opens new possibilities to apply competence from the oil and gas sector. CO2 capture and storage (CCS) is a key technology to both, facilitate a cost-efficient transition and enable “negative emissions”, which are needed in most climate scenarios to handle early emission overshoot. This presentation will first set the scene by presenting the role of CCS in emission reduction scenarios. Then, the principal components of the CCS chain will be explained, with particular reference to the differences to oil and gas exploration and production activities, with examples from Equinor’s CCS projects. Finally, competence needs will be discussed, including competences that differ from standard petroleum industry requirements. Focus will be on subsurface activities of CCS (CO2 storage).

Biography Silvia Kassold:
MSc in Geology at Clausthal University of Technology (D). Worked since 2008 in Equinor, first on various production assets before joining Northern Lights CCS project in 2018. In the Northern Lights project, the role is seismic interpretation in EL001 and planning of CO2 injectors.

Biography Kjersti Vebenstad: 

MSc from Norwegian University of Technology ( NTH now NTNU) in Petroleum geology. Worked since 1985 in Equinor and a short period in BP. Subsurface experience from exploration via field development to production. Additional experience from Gas supply planning and commercial negotiation. In 2018 I joined the Northern Lights project. Here my main task has been related to Containment Risk Assessment
